Killers Of The Flower Moon is an upcoming epic Western crime drama directed by Martin Scorsese.
The highly-anticipated first trailer for Killers Of The Flower Moon was released on Thursday as it features Leonardo DiCaprio‘s return to the big screen just a few weeks after a sneak peek shown at CinemaCon.
The film explores the harrowing true story of the ‘reign of terror’ that left two dozen Native Americans dead.
The new trailer showed Ernest Burkhart (played by DiCaprio) arriving in Oklahoma where members indigenous Osage Nation tribe reside, becoming romantically involved with Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), and being interrogated by officer Tom White (Jesse Plemons).
It also features Robert De Niro as cattleman William Hale who is the uncle of Dicaprio’s character Burkhart.
The film marks 48-year-old DiCaprio’s first film on the big screen since 2019 Quentin Tarantino Flick Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. He also starred in 2021 film Don’t Look Up which streamed on Netflix.
The epic clip is narrated by Burkhart as DiCaprio puts on his best midwestern accent as he says: ‘The Osage took their name from Missouri and Osage Rivers. Ni-U-Kon-Ska. Children of the Middle Waters.’
As the plot is centered around Hale convincing his weak-willed nephew Burkhart to marry Kyle in a plot to eventually murder them and inherit their wealth from oil, their courtship and romance could be seen in the early part of the trailer.
Burkhart’s narration continues: ‘Move, said the great white father. There are many, so many hungry wolves. Can you find the wolves in this picture?’
This is where things in the trailer take a much darker turn as there are several short scenes shown including : Burkhart could be seen comforting Kyle as a lifeless body – who is presumed to be a family member is carried, Hale giving an emphatic handshake, a stabbing, and a shot in the courtroom of Hale sitting next to his attorney W.S. Hamilton who is played by Brendan Fraser.
One of the more interesting scenes showed Burkhart being interrogated by law enforcement officer White in a very intense exchange.
The epic trailer concludes with an atmospheric shot of a room featuring several men and women including Hamilton with Burkhart once again querying: ‘Can you find the wolves in this picture?’
The film is premiering at Cannes with a limited release in select cinemas on October 6 with a wider release on October 20.
There will later be a wider release in the US on October 20 by Paramount Pictures and will eventually have a streaming release on Apple TV+ but remains unclear when that will happen.
The blockbuster is based on the 2017 non-fiction book of the same name written by David Grann.
Set in the 1920s, it centers on the FBI’s investigation into a string of murders after several members of the Osage tribe in Oklahoma were slaughtered.
